As Ugandans anxiously join the rest of the World to usher in 2026, the administrators (admins) of the different social media pages especially whatsapp groups have been challenged to re-direct the discussions on the groups.
According to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Managing Director Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha, the existing different social media platforms/pages should be an opportunity for people/Ugandans to discuss fundamental issues that are affecting their communities.
“We need to help our people to move from one step/level to another level,” Mugisha noted.
Mugisha was on Sunday addressing residents of Rwenjeru ward in Nyakabirizi Division during their Rwenjeru-My-Roots end of year get-together party at Rush gardens where he was the Chief Guest.
“Don’t use your digital systems to manipulate people but use them in a productive manner. Ask like AI (Artificial Intelligence) on what a capital of Shs1million can do for you to start business to be able to generate income,” Mugisha argued.
“Use them to educate people on how they can increase their household incomes. Use them to discuss on how you can address challenges in your communities like improving education standards.”
He cautioned especially the youth against misusing social media to kill the networks that would have helped to connect them to possible opportunities.
“Use the platforms to build networks instead of ‘killing’ them,” he encouraged.
“Open a social media/digital ‘accounts’ and deposit there networks which can be of help,” he challenged.
Mugisha’s concerns comes at a time when almost each category/group of Ugandans that is; each village, clan, professional bodies………have grouped themselves into different whatsapp groups/pages. Some use their whatsapp groups to discuss issues pertaining their fields of work/villages, others use them to influence, connect…….. while others misuse them to manipulate and harass.
The Managing Director called upon Ugandans to follow what the President Yoweri Museveni teaches on poverty eradication. “There is a lot of wisdom in what he teaches us,” Mugisha said.
He further commended Ugandans for embracing the NWSC water programs saying government has invested heavily in extending water to rural areas. End.
