BUSHENYI: Amidst teachers strike, the Bishop of Diocese of West Ankole Rt. Rev Johnson Twinomujuni has challenged teachers at all levels to live exemplary lifestyle before the children/students they teach.

The Bishop said everything that a teacher does infront of a child/student has got an impact on the young generation.

“You teach these children/students directly or indirectly and therefore whenever you appear before them, you should appear to them as men/women of decency so that they also grow up with a desire to be men/women,” Twinomujuni said.

The Bishop was on Thursday presiding over the confirmation and dedication ceremony at Bweranyangi Girls secondary school in Bushenyi district.

Twinomujuni’s call comes at a time when there is a standoff between teachers and government over the issue of disparities in salaries. At the beginning of this term (3rd term), the Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) announced an industrial strike which has paralyzed the education sector leaving children stranded. However the Bishop did not comment on the strike.

“May God guide us so that in our times there is a legacy that we shall be remembered for,” Twinomujuni said urging people to use their positions to do good things in their times.

Twinomujuni prayed for the students and urged them to remain parents’ source of pride in their entire life. “Continue being orderly and organized in your life. Care about order and care about decency,” the Bishop emphasized.

He further called upon the students not to settle for the average but to always desire to be better and to be the best.

“In life, you need to compete but the one you need to compete with should be yourself so that you become more better tomorrow,” Twinomujuni encouraged hastening to add, “leave the rest and have the desire to be a better you.”

The school headmistress Molly Buhwairoha hailed the Bishop for transforming the Diocese especially the education sector.  “Our beloved Bishop, thank you very much for the pastoral visits, thank you for praying for us and for all round support you give to this school and to all schools in the Diocese,” Buhwairoha said.

The headmistress disclosed how the school has embarked on the construction of a four store-dormitory which is estimated to cost Shs7Billion. According to Buhwairoha, the above project follows a shortage of space which has hit the school due to the increase in students’ population.

“This year for O’level, we almost have two schools in one that Bweranyangi Girls’ secondary school main with 499 candidates and the annex with 19students,” she reported.

Buhwairoha expressed worry saying if technology is not well regulated especially by parents from homes, it is likely to yield negatively among the youth. End.
