BUHWEJU: All is set for the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to commission the water projects constructed in Buhweju district on 2nd June 2025.

The NWSC Buhweju area Manager Edwin Nasasira said the NWSC Managing Director Dr. Eng Silver Mugisha will preside over the commissioning of Kamukaki project.

The official commissioning follows the completion of; the extension of a 3-phase power line, a pumping system, installation of a 4km transmission line, construction of a 5km distribution line, construction of a 65cub.m steel tank, construction of 10 public water points among others.

Kamukaki project joins other projects like Katinda mini water supply and Ibariro booster station which NWSC developed and other water projects which were formerly under the gravity flow schemes before they were taken over by NWSC for efficient service delivery.

Kamukaki has the capacity to deliver over 500,000 liters of water on daily basis to the people of Karungu Sub County, educational institutions in the area and the neighboring areas.

The MD will also announce the different water sources which have been lying idle that NWSC intends to harness and develop.

“We have mapped out a number of water sources which NWSC intends to develop in the near future to be able to extend safe and clean water to more people of Buhweju district,” Nasasira said.

Buhweju residents have described the interventions by NWSC in Buhweju as exciting and timely.

“Many of us ‘trekked’ to Omukayuya trading centre to see a water tank fitted up in the air and how water flows from a tap,” said Jovanisi Kyozeire a resident as she appreciated NWSC.

“To us, it’s a dream come true because we had never thought of getting water through a tap!” Kyozeire says.

Out of Buhweju’s 14 hilly sub counties, NWSC currently serves the seven sub counties of Bitsya, Buhunga,  Karungu, Rwengwe, Kashenyi-Kajani and the town councils of Nyakishana and Nsiika.

Buhweju hosts the major water sources/tributaries which feed into R. Rwizi one of the biggest river in the South Western region. “It is unfortunate that Buhweju has been supplying areas like Mbarara city with water for all this time but Buhweju people the hosts of the water source were left to suffer,” said the Buhweju district chairman Deo Atuheire as he commended NWSC for extending its services to Buhweju.

Atuheire said called upon NWSC to also come up with a plan of restoring and protecting the different water sources which have been degraded in Buhweju.

“Once Buhweju dries up, R. Rwizi will be no more and Mbarara city and other areas will face the crisis,” Atuheire warned. End.
